leave a comment »

Ash-Sha`bi reported that Shatiyr bin Shakl said: “I heard Ibn Mas`ud say:

`The most comprehensive Ayah in the Qur’an is in Surat An-Nahl:

(Verily, Allah enjoins justice and kindness…)”’

It was reported by Ibn Jarir.

Verses concerning Sahaba

Allah has forgiven the Prophet, the Muhajirin and the Ansar who followed him in the time of distress (Tabuk expedition), after the hearts of a party of them had nearly deviated (from the right path), but He accepted their repentance. Certainly, He is unto them full of kindness, Most Merciful.

And (Allah has forgiven) the three who stayed behind, until for them the earth, vast as it is, was straitened and their souls were straitened to them, and they perceived that there is no fleeing from Allah, and no refuge but with Him. Then, He forgave them, that they might beg for His pardon. Verily, Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful.) (119. O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds).

Surah Tawba 117-118

Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave the pledge to you under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down As-Sakinah upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory.

Surah al Fath 18

And the foremost to embrace Islam of the Muhajirin and the Ansar and also those who followed them exactly (in faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.

Surah al Taubah 100

(And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their property, seeking bounties from Allah and (His) good pleasure, and helping Allah and His Messenger. Such are indeed the truthful.

And (it is also for) those who, before them, had homes and had adopted the faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given, and give them preference over themselves even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own greed, such are they who will be the successful.

Surah al Hashr 8-9

All praise is due to Allah Whose hearing has encompassed all voices…

`A’ishah said, “All praise is due to Allah Whose hearing has encompassed all voices! By Allah, she who came to complain about her husband to the Messenger of Allah was speaking while I was in another part of the room, yet I did not hear some of what she said. Allah sent down,

(Indeed Allah has heard the statement of her that disputes with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah. And Allah hears the argument between you both. Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Seer.)[58:1]

Seeking worldly benefits

Whosoever desires the life of the world and its glitter, to them We shall pay in full (the wages of) their deeds therein, and they will have no diminution therein

[surah Hud]

Al-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said concerning this verse,

“Verily those who show off, will be given their reward for their good deeds in this life. This will be so that they are not wronged, even the amount equivalent to the size of the… speck on a date-stone.” Ibn `Abbas continued saying, “Therefore, whoever does a good deed seeking to acquire worldly gain – like fasting, prayer, or standing for prayer at night – and he does so in order to acquire worldly benefit, then Allah says, `Give him the reward of that which he sought in the worldly life,’ and his deed that he did is wasted because he was only seeking the life of this world. In the Hereafter he will be of the losers.”

Ibn `Abbas, RadiAllahu anhu, said:

“Between Adam, ‘alayhis salam, and Nuh, ‘alayhis salam, there were ten generations, during all of which humans were following Islam.”

Ibn Abbas has been given knowledge of Qur’an

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Ibn `Umar said that a man came to him and questioned him about when the heavens and earth were joined together then they were parted. He said, “Go to that old man (Shaykh) and ask him, then come and tell me what he says to you.” So he went to Ibn `Abbas and asked him. Ibn `Abbas said: “Yes, the heavens were joined together and it did not rain, and the earth was joined together and nothing grew. When living beings were created to populate the earth, rain came forth from the heavens and vegetation came forth from the earth.” The man went back to Ibn `Umar and told him what had been said. Ibn `Umar said, “Now I know that Ibn `Abbas has been given knowledge of the Qur’an. He has spoken the truth, and this is how it was.” Ibn `Umar said: “I did not like the daring attitude of Ibn `Abbas in his Tafsir of the Qur’an, but now I know that he has been given knowledge of the Qur’an.”

The Qur’an & The Sahaba

leave a comment »

Narrated from Abdullaah ibn ‘Urwa ibn Zubayr from his grandmother; Asmaa bint Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with them); that he said:

‘I said to her: What was the condition of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah  when the Qur’an was recited to them?’

She said:

“They were just like how Allaah described them: Their eyes shedding tears, and their skins shivering.”

Source: Zuhd wa Raqaaiq of Ibnul Mubaarak

Allaah The Mighty says:

Allâh has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Qur’ân), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allâh. That is the guidance of Allâh. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no guide.  [Az-Zumar: 23]
