Repentance of Zadhan al-Kindee at the hands of Ibn Mas’ud

Zadhan said:

I was a young boy with a nice voice and great ability to play the flute. Once, I was with one of my friends we had wine while I entertained them with music. Then, Ibn Mas’ud  رضي الله عنه passed by us and hit the wine container wasting its content, broke the lute and said: “If what is heard of your nice voice, O young boy, is the Qur’an, I wish I was like you” and then he moved on. So, I said to my companions: “who is this?” They said: This is Ibn Mas’ud So, it occurred to me that I turn to Allah in repentance. I followed him crying and held his cloth. He turned towards me, embraced me and then said, “The one loved by Allah is welcomed. Sit (here). Then he entered and brought me some dates.

It is reported that ‘Abdullāh b. Mas’ūd  (رضي الله عنه) said:

This world (the dunyā) is [only taken as] a home by those who will have no real home [in Jannah], and it is the wealth of those who will have no real wealth, and it is gathered and collected for by those who have no real intelligence.

Imam Ahmad recorded that `Abdullah bin Mas`ud (رضي الله عنه) said, “Allah curses women who practice tattooing and those who get themselves tattooed, and the women who remove the hair from their eyebrows and faces and those who make artificial spaces between their teeth in order to look more beautiful, whereby changing Allah’s creation.” His statement reached a woman from Bani Asad called, Umm Ya`qub (رضي الله عنها), who came to `Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) and said, “I have come to know that you have cursed such and such” He replied, “Why should I not curse those whom Allah’s Messenger has cursed and who are cursed in Allah’s Book!” Umm Ya`qub said, “I have read the whole Qur’an, but did not find in it what you say.” He said, “Verily, if you have read the Qur’an, you have found it. Didn’t you read,

(And whatsoever the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) gives you take it and whatsoever he forbids you, you abstain (from it).)”

She replied, “Yes, I did.” He said, “Verily, Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) forbade such things. ” “She said, “But I think that your wife does these things” He said, “Go and look at her.” She went and watched her, but could not see anything in support of her claim. She went back to `Abdullah bin Mas`ud (رضي الله عنه) and said that she did not notice anything on his wife. On that he said, “If my wife was as you thought, I would not keep her with me.”

It was narrated that Shaqeeq ibn Salamah said: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) addressed us and said:

By Allah, I learned seventy odd surahs from the lips of the Messenger  (صلى الله عليه وسلم) of Allah, and by Allah the companions of the Prophet  (صلى الله عليه وسلم) knew that I was the most knowledgeable of them of the Book of Allah, but I am not the best of them.

Concentration of Knowledge

with one comment

Masrooq said:

I studied the companions (رضي الله عنهم) of Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and discovered that knowledge is concentrated in 6 individuals among them: ‘Ali, ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, ‘Umar, Zayd Ibn Thabit, Abu Darda and Ubay Ibn K’ab (رضي الله عنهم)
. Then I studied these 6 individuals and found that knowledge is concentrated in 2 of them: ‘Ali and ‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud

‘Umar Ibn Khattab  (رضي الله عنه) said:

Learn Fara’id (knowledge of inheritance), language and the sunnah as you learn the Qur’an.

‘Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud  (رضي الله عنه) said:

Learn Fara’id and teach it to the people. I am going to die, and the knowledge shall be removed that two men will disagree on an issue concerning Faraa’id and they will not find anyone who can decide between them.

Closest to the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in style of living and habits

Abdur Rahman ibn Yazid reported that they went to Hudhayfah (رضي الله عنه) and requested him to narrate to them about one who was most close of all people to Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in style of living and habits that they might learn from him and listen to him.’ He said,

“The closest of men to Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in way of life and habits is Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) so much so that he would visit his house more regularly than us and knew his confidential affairs more than other sahabah. Indeed, Ibn Umm Abd (Abdullah ibn Mas’ud) was the closest to Allah than the others.’

Our Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) will be a witness

leave a comment »

Al-Bukhari recorded that `Abdullah bin Mas`ud (رضي الله عنه) said, “The Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) of Allah said to me, `Recite to me.’ I said, `O Messenger of Allah! Should I recite (the Qur’an) to you, while it was revealed to you’ He said, `Yes, for I like to hear it from other people.’ I recited Surat An-Nisa’ until I reached this Ayah,

(How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people) He then said, `Stop now.’ I found that his eyes were tearful.”

Have Taqwa of Allah as is His due,..

leave a comment »

Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that `Abdullah bin Mas`ud (رضي الله عنه) commented on the Ayah,

(Have Taqwa of Allah as is His due,)

“That He is obeyed and not defied, remembered and not forgotten and appreciated and not unappreciated.”

This has an authentic chain of narration to `Abdullah bin Mas`ud
