Eating only what the people can afford…

When ‘Utbah Ibn Farqad went to Azerbaijan, some Khabees was brought to him and when he ate it, he found that it was sweet and good. He said, “By Allah, I will make something like that for the commander of the Faithful.” So he made two huge trays of it for him and sent them on a camel, accompanied by two men, to ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه). When they came to ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه), he opened them and asked, “What is this?” They said, “Khabees.” He tasted it and found it was sweet. He said, “Can all the muslims afford to have this in their homes?” He said, “Then take it back.” Then he (رضي الله عنه) wrote to him (‘Utbah) saying:

It is not the effort of your father or mother (that you are living this life). Make sure that the muslims are eating the same kind of food as you have in your own home.
