Zayd Ibn Thabit (رضي الله عنه) said:

The Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) of Allah asked me, “Do you know syriac language? I said,”No.” He said,”Go and learn it.” And I learnt it in 17 days.

[Siyar A’lam an Nubalaa 2/429]

Masrooq said:

The knowledge of Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وسلم) companions was with 6 persons: ‘Umar, ‘Ali, Ibn Mas’ood, Zayd Ibn Thabit, Ubay Ibn Ka’b and Abu Musa al Ash’ari (رضي الله عنهم).

[Tadheed al Kamal 6/436]

Ibn ‘Abdil Barr said:

They said Zayd Ibn Thabit (رضي الله عنه) excelled others in two things, the Qur’an and knowledge of the law of inheritance.

[Al-Istee’aab 3/539]

Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

The most knowledgeable person among my ummah in regard to the knowledge of the law of inheritance is Zayd Ibn Thabit

[Al Hakim]

Ahmad Ibn ‘Abdullah Al ‘Ijli said:

People are upon the recitation of Qur’an as compiled by Zayd They are upon the knowledge of the law of inheritance as recorded by Zayd

[Siyar A’lam an Nubala]

‘Umar Ibn Khattab (رضي الله عنه) delivered a speech at Jaabiyah in which he said:

Whoever wants to ask about the law of inheritance should go to Zayd Ibn Thabit (رضي الله عنه); Whoever wants to know about fiqh should go to Mu’adh Ibn Jabal (رضي الله عنه)  and whoever wants to ask for money should come to me. For Allah has made me the store keeper and dispenser.

[Siyar A’lam an Nubala]

Salim said:

We were with Ibn ‘Umar  (رضي الله عنه) the day Zayd Ibn Thabit  (رضي الله عنه) died and I said, ‘The people’s scholar has died today.’ Ibn ‘Umar  (رضي الله عنه) said, “May Allah have mercy upon him. He was the people’s scholar during the caliphate of  ‘Umar (رضي الله عنه) . ‘Umar  (رضي الله عنه) sent other scholars to all over the regions and prohibited them from giving  verdicts based on individual opinions. But he made Zayd  (رضي الله عنه) stay in Madinah so that he could provide Fatwa for its people.’

Indeed, everything else besides Allah is false

Rasulullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,”The most truthful word spoken by a poet was the word of Labeed (رضي الله عنه):

Indeed, everything else besides Allah is false;…

Sahih Bukhari

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyya said that this hadith illustrates the point that Allah is the ultimate truth and needs to be known above all things.

Labeed (رضي الله عنه) was a pagan at the time of writing of this poem but later on accepted islam. His couplets are as follows:

ألا كل شيء ما خلا الله باطل

Indeed, everything else besides Allah is false;

And every pleasure without exception will end.

In Makkah, when Quraysh were at their worst in inflicting suffering on muslims, ‘Uthman Ibn Maz’oon (رضي الله عنه) had just returned from first hijrah of the muslims… While he was in the company of Qurayshite leaders, Labeed (رضي الله عنه) came to them and began to recite some of his poetry.

When Labeed (رضي الله عنه) recited,” Indeed, everything else besides Allah is false.” ‘Uthman (رضي الله عنه) said,”You have spoken the truth.” But when he recited,”And every pleasure without exception will end.” ‘Uthman said,” You have lied. The pleasures of Paradise do not end.”…

Imam Ibn Hajar Al Asqlani states that if the term baatil is taken to mean haalik (perish), then the pleasures of paradise are included. And everything else besides Allah can perish even if Allah created it for eternity afterwards.

Will you not appoint a successor?

‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) was asked, “Will you not appoint a successor?”

He said, ” No rather, I shall leave you just as Allah’s Messenger  (صلى الله عليه وسلم) left you. If Allah has decreed good for you then He will bring you together to select the best of you just as He made you choose the best of you after Allah’s Messenger

This was an acknowledgement by ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) just before his death that Abu Bakr (رضي الله عنه) was superior in excellence.

Abdur Rahman ibn Yazid reported that they went to Hudhayfah (رضي الله عنه) and requested him to narrate to them about one who was most close of all people to Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in style of living and habits that they might learn from him and listen to him.’ He said,

“The closest of men to Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in way of life and habits is Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) so much so that he would visit his house more regularly than us and knew his confidential affairs more than other sahabah. Indeed, Ibn Umm Abd (Abdullah ibn Mas’ud) was the closest to Allah than the others.’
